RICS: Raising the Bar

4th Dec 2015

Paul Bagust – Director, Facilities Management Professional Group, RICS

In an increasingly competitive, global business environment, facilities management has a critical strategic role to play in the experience of the end user of buildings and facilities, and ultimately the success of the organisations operating from them.  Demand for talent is growing while FM career paths are undergoing significant change and the profession faces a potentially serious future talent shortage.

It is clear from RICS’ research ‘Raising the Bar: Enhancing the Strategic Role of Facilities Management’ that the critical skills needed for future FM leaders focus primarily around collaboration, interpersonal relationships, delegation, strategy formulation and implementation, and managing service providers.

The ultimate goal for RICS is for facilities management to be fully recognised as a core function of all businesses’ strategies and to support and advocate the leadership opportunities which a career in FM can open up.  We champion the professionalisation of facilities management and believe that a chartered qualification improves consistency of standards across the discipline of strategic FM and supports the development of leadership management credentials.

As part of this we provide the tools required for facilities managers to think and act ‘strategically’; to deliver performance oriented procurement, life-cycle costing and service management. This includes a range of CPD and training, best practice standards and guidance, research and a suite of strategic FM case studies to demonstrate how FM can add real business value.

RICS launched our ‘Aspire to Lead’ campaign, designed to support professional FM education and actively encourage both aspiring and established FM professionals, in all stages of their careers, to aim for chartered status on their path towards becoming leaders in their respective fields.

We believe the future for FM is bright, as the profession becomes more critical to organisational strategy and effectiveness. However, this changing future is also creating a near-term shortage of the talent needed to move FM towards its legitimate role as a strategic resource.

RICS offers the highest professional qualification for leaders in the FM sector, the only chartered facilities management status, setting the benchmark for standards across the industry. Underpinned by ethics and independent regulation, an RICS qualification ensures that facilities managers offer consistent standards of professional advice and give clients increased confidence.
