Transform Business Through Technology & Belief

CIO

Transforming the Business Through Technology by Creating Belief, Ranjit Gill, CIO at McKesson UK

At our CIO Event at Said Business School, Oxford University, Ranjit Gill, CIO at McKesson UK will be speaking on our Opening Panel discussion as well as running his own keynote presentation on the topic of ‘Transforming the Business Through Technology by Creating Belief’.

The Opening Panel is entitled ‘Preparing for 2030 - CIO of the next decade’. As digitisation and the pace of change transform everything we know about business, it’s imperative that CIOs respond to market trends and build the next-generation workforce. It’s no small task, but the key to IT talent is understanding skill shifts and knowing when to retain, retrain, recruit or even outsource.

In his keynote presentation, Ranjit will speak about creating belief when creating the case and then embarking upon the delivery journey for large ambitious projects and will identify the key components of successful implementations that deliver business outcomes. Drawing on experience, he will discuss the need to create partnerships both internally and externally and how to empower and engage all stakeholders to create champions.

Speaking about his own journey, he makes it clear that having belief is key to succeeding: ‘I like the idea of transforming through belief. A lot of it is around the fact that there is a level of acceptance by the board, peers & stakeholders. And then a lot of it is around how you turn strategy into action. How do you take the ideas and make them real? A lot of that is about belief and the different ways you can get people to believe in you and what you can do.’

When asked about his experiences, Ranjit laid out how he laid out his strategy in his current role at McKesson, the oldest and largest healthcare company in the United States serving more than 50% of U.S. hospitals and 20% of physicians, where Ranjit sits as CIO of the UK office.

‘First of all you need to work out what the issues and challenges are and you need to have the right people in the right places to understand what the key priorities are. When we started our priorities were far too broad and there was too much on the agenda. So it’s about nailing down what is really important.

Then you can start to win the trust by incrementally moving the dial on delivery and service by doing the basics right, getting the service right and therefore getting a better perception of IT. Then you will start to deliver on commitments much better and you can build a comprehensive roadmap.

However it all comes back to business value. I’m not one for delivering IT projects as that’s more for the technologists. I’m much more focused on how we deliver greater profitability and growing the business.’

Ranjit has over 25 years of broad IT experience ranging from software developer, SAP functional consultant, SAP Program Director, managing and growing IT consulting revenue pipelines in excess of £40m and over 6 years experience as an IT Director for multinational organisations. Experience of many different industry sectors (Pharmaceuticals, Retail, FMCG, Business Consulting).

He has specialised in delivering increased business performance, acquisitions, divestitures and cost reduction. This has been achieved through developing and implementing business focused IT strategies that aligned IT better to the business objectives resulting in sustainable business performance improvements and organisational transformation within IT. Cost reduction has been delivered through organisational mergers, rationalisation of business applications (SAP) and levering global scale.
